Finally I found some free software (honest to goodness freeware) that allows me to do just that!  It’s really very cool, and quite easy to master. By the time I had finished taking the tutorial on how to make a hip hop beat that is on the site, I could actually do sample chopping as well as doing some drum pattern programming, and I was truly starting to feel good about doing some basic audio editing! I think that their program has all that fundamental functionality that you would find in those pricey professional software packages. The point is that you can actually record songs, edit them and then master them using this neat software!

See, no matter what kind of music you want to create a beat is created with drums, chopped samples, bass and of course either real or synthesized instruments. So, I concentrated just on the drums. It was really easy to find drum sounds, and those were free too, so I downloaded them utilizing individual sound files for each type of drum I wanted such as hi-hat, snare, kick and stuff like that. Then it was just a matter of chopping up break beats, which allowed me to actually isolate each individual drum. Of course, I could have used actual drums and recorded that, but I don’t own any, so this was cool.  Remember that the samples are free, so take your time and listen to each sample being offered. You wan to utilize only clean samples. If you find one with static or a hiss or some extraneous sounds you don’t want to take that one, obviously.

Once you’ve put all the sounds you are going to use into the software, you’ll then want to begin to load the samples. That’s pretty easy, just click the load sample, search out the name you gave it in your browser, and click open. Do that for each of the drum beats you wanted and save them as hi-hat, snare, kick etc. The software will show you a drum sequencer, so that you can have one measure of four beats, for example, which will be divided into 16 steps. So next you’ll create 3 distinct drum patterns, consisting of something like the intro, the main and the bridge. Some songs don’t have all three, but we’ll use this as our example. Now, on the software set the tempo. Again since we’re using a hip hop beat, you’ll want it pretty fast, say like maybe 96, since hip hop beats are ordinarily between 90 to maybe 100 beats per minute. Do the same for the kick, and the other drum pattern, until all three are done. Finally you’ll program the song now that you know how to make a hip hop beat!
